Activist : A nuclear facility doesn’t always mean jobs for community

PIKETON — “Nuclear” isn’t synonymous with “jobs,” said one activist in Pike County Saturday night.

A handful of people, including noted author and activist Lois Gibbs, gathered for an intimate town meeting with speakers who touched on topics ranging from the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership to newly discovered earthworks near the Department of Energy reservation.

“Moving (spent nuclear fuel rods) at all is a tremendously risky opportunity for God knows what to happen,” said Mary Olson, director of Nuclear Information and
Resource Service’s southeast office.

One of 11 sites to be chosen for review for GNEP, the Piketon Uranium Enrichment plant could be home to a program officials say will recycle spent fuel rods and convert them to new fuel for nuclear power plants. Read More

Send Additional Reminders

A week after the first reminder, send a sterner email: “Payment on this product is now overdue. I will be unable to complete any more work for you until the invoice is paid in full. Labor Market - A Key To Fed’s Outlook

7/1/2007 8:30:12 AM The Fed decision of last week was a non-event, as the interest rate decision was along the expected lines. While acknowledging that inflation is moderating, the Fed reiterated its obsession on inflation, which came as a disappointment to the markets. Economists believe that unless the labor market shows some slack, the Fed may be unwilling to even signal that they may contemplate monetary policy easing.

Economic reports released last week offered no fresh news on the housing front. The existing home sales revealed a 0.3% dip to 5.99 million units, with weakness centered mainly on sales of existing single-family homes. The recent month’s reading marked the lowest level since June 2003. The inventories of new homes rose to represent a supply of 8.9 months, while the median existing home prices declined from a year-ago.

New home sales fell to 915,000 from a downwardly revised reading of 930,000 for April. However, the median price of new homes increased in May. Notwithstanding a decline in the recent month, inventories of new homes remain high by historical standards. Meanwhile, the S&P/Case-Shiller home price index, which measures the changes in the value of the residential market in 20 metropolitan regions in the U.S., released yesterday revealed a 2.7% decline in April from the year-ago period. The pace of decline marked the fastest in about 16 years. Read More

Unemployment rates released in local job market

(6/29/2007) By Robert Price Unemployment figures released Friday by the state show a slight increase in the number of jobless Nebraskans. But when compared nationwide, Nebraska’s 3.1 unemployment rate is still quite low.

From Kearney to Columbus, rates are all below 3 percent.

Compare that to a national average of 4.5 percent unemployment.

Since this time last year, the state has taken on about 20,000 more employees.

With the employment pool seemingly shrinking, many businesses have to search a little harder to find new workers.

Jacalyn Smith of Hastings has been out of the workforce over a year. She has decided to get back in and started looking for a job last week. Read More.

BY JULIA ANDERSON, Columbian Business EditorSince 1970, employment growth in Clark County has averaged a strong 4 percent a year, according to a recent state labor market report. But over the past 10 years, growth has slowed to 2.5 percent. Job creation was robust from 1993 through 1997, ranging from 4 percent to 7 percent a year. But from 1998 through 2003, there was little or no job creation.

By 2004, the local job market snapped back with a 3.9 percent expansion and continued strong in 2005 with 4.3 percent growth.

So far this year, annual job growth has slowed to 2.2 percent. Read More
